This bill amends the general municipal law to expand the circumstances under which volunteer firefighters can lose their service award program benefits. Currently, the law only prevents firefighters convicted of arson from receiving benefits, but this bill broadens the provision to include any felony committed against a volunteer fire department, volunteer fire company, fire district, or fire protection district. Specifically, if a volunteer firefighter is convicted of such a felony, they will automatically forfeit all past and future benefits from their service award program. A service award program is typically a retirement-type benefit for volunteer firefighters who have dedicated significant time to their local fire protection services. The bill aims to ensure that firefighters who commit serious crimes against their own fire departments cannot continue to receive financial benefits meant to recognize and support their community service. The legislation would take effect immediately upon passage.
