This means that Christine Floyd will be eligible to file for and receive pension benefits as if Derek had been an active member of the pension fund at the time of his death. Specifically, she will be entitled to an Ordinary Death Benefit equal to three times his final year's salary (approximately $92,200), which would be rounded up to the nearest $1,000. The entire cost of implementing this special legislation, estimated at $307,000, will be paid by the New York City Fire Department.
