Bill Summary
AN ACT to amend 1909 PA 279, entitled ?An act to provide for the incorporation of cities and for revising and amending their charters; to provide for certain powers and duties; to provide for the levy and collection of taxes by cities, borrowing of money, and issuance of bonds or other evidences of indebtedness; to validate actions taken, bonds issued, and obligations heretofore incurred; to prescribe penalties and provide remedies; and to repeal acts and parts of acts on specific dates,? (MCL 117.1 to 117.38) by adding section 3c.
AI Summary
This bill modifies how the terms of office for elected city officials in Michigan begin. Specifically, for any city officer elected after December 31, 2024, their term will start at 12 noon on the first day of the month following their election, regardless of what the city's charter currently states. This change applies even if a city's charter already has a provision for terms to begin after an election but before the first of the following month. Additionally, the bill clarifies that someone elected to fill a vacancy in a city office cannot officially take their oath of office until the election results have been officially confirmed by the relevant board of canvassers. The bill is intended to take effect immediately upon approval.
