This bill amends the laws governing the Nesconset Volunteer Exempt Firefighter's Benevolent Association to clarify its purpose and how it can use funds collected from foreign fire insurance premium taxes. Specifically, it updates the terminology from "firemen" to "firefighters" and expands the association's purposes to include providing relief, aid, and assistance to disabled, indigent, or injured volunteer members and their families, promoting their welfare, maintaining headquarters, ensuring health and safety, and enhancing morale through social and recreational activities, all while continuing to promote volunteer fire service within the Nesconset fire department's protected territory. The bill also updates references to sections of the insurance law related to the collection of foreign fire insurance premium taxes, which are taxes imposed on premiums for fire insurance covering property within the Nesconset volunteer fire department's territory, and clarifies that these collected taxes can now be used for any of the association's stated purposes, not just for the care and relief of disabled or indigent members and their families. Importantly, paid firefighters are explicitly excluded from membership. The changes regarding the use of foreign fire insurance premium taxes will take effect for taxes due and premiums received on or after January 1, 2027.
