This resolution declares April 30, 2025 as Alpha Phi Alpha Day in Illinois, recognizing the historic and ongoing contributions of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated, the first intercollegiate Greek-letter fraternity established by and for African Americans. Founded in 1906 by seven college men known as the "Seven Jewels" at Cornell University, the fraternity was created to provide brotherhood, support, and advocacy for African Americans facing racial prejudice and social injustices. Throughout its 119-year history, Alpha Phi Alpha has been committed to academic excellence, civil rights, and community service, with national programs like "Go-to-High-School, Go-to-College" and strategic partnerships with various social organizations. The fraternity has produced numerous notable leaders, including Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Justice Thurgood Marshall, and many elected officials, and has over 700 chapters globally, with 32 active chapters in Illinois. The resolution celebrates the fraternity's long-standing commitment to leadership, scholarship, and social justice, and welcomes its members to the State Capitol on Alpha Day to commemorate their achievements and ongoing mission.
