This bill modifies occupational disability benefits for peace officers and firefighters by increasing their monthly disability benefit amount. Currently, employees receive 40 percent of their gross monthly compensation at the time of disability termination. Under the new legislation, for each month after the first 12 months of disability, peace officers and firefighters will receive 75 percent of their gross monthly compensation instead. The bill also ensures that while receiving these enhanced disability benefits, employees remain fully vested in employer contributions to their individual accounts, and the employer continues to make contributions to the employee's account based on their gross monthly compensation at the time of disability termination. Importantly, employees cannot elect distributions from their individual contribution account while receiving disability benefits. The act takes effect immediately upon passage, providing a swift implementation of the enhanced disability benefits for these critical public safety professionals.
