The resolution points out that mental health conditions are the most common complications of pregnancy and childbirth, with up to 85% of women experiencing mood disturbances and one in five developing more serious symptoms like depression, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder. According to the Ohio Department of Health, mental health conditions are currently the leading cause of pregnancy-related deaths in the state. The resolution emphasizes that these conditions affect women across all races, ages, and socioeconomic levels and can have profound consequences on maternal and infant health, early childhood development, and family well-being. The members of the 136th General Assembly of Ohio are resolving to recognize this issue, encourage investment in support programs, promote communication between mothers and healthcare providers, and raise awareness about the silent health crisis of perinatal mental health. The resolution concludes by directing the House Clerk to distribute authenticated copies of the resolution to Ohio's news media.
