This bill requires schools in New York to include instruction on eating disorder prevention as a mandatory part of health education for students in grades six through twelve. The instruction must be age-appropriate and designed to help students develop a healthy self-image and learn how to live healthily. When developing these educational materials, the state education commissioner is encouraged to consult with comprehensive care centers for eating disorders, which are established under mental hygiene law. The bill amends the existing education law to add eating disorders to the list of health topics that must be covered in school health education programs, alongside mental health, substance abuse, and cancer prevention. The new requirement will take effect on the first day of September following the bill's enactment, with preparatory administrative work allowed to begin immediately.
