This bill amends the Public School Code of 1949 to update guidelines for grading, classification, and promotion of students in public schools. Specifically, the bill requires that classroom teachers assign grades that accurately reflect a student's mastery of an assignment, prohibits school districts from mandating minimum grades that do not consider the quality of a student's work, and allows students a reasonable opportunity to retake assignments or examinations on which they received a failing grade in order to improve their grade. The legislation maintains the existing provision that students who demonstrate proficiency can be promoted twice each year, while adding more detailed language about how grades should be determined. These changes aim to create a more fair and flexible grading system that encourages student learning and provides opportunities for improvement. The bill will go into effect 60 days after its passage.
