This bill amends the Retirement and Social Security Law to ensure that the "salary base" used to calculate pension benefits for members of the New York City Police Pension Fund (POLICE) who joined the force on or after July 1, 2000, is determined in the same way as for those who joined before that date. Previously, members hired after July 1, 2000, had their salary base calculated based only on their final 12 months of earnings, while those hired before that date had their salary base calculated using the greater of their final 12 months of earnings or the average of their earnings over any consecutive three-year period. This change, which applies to members retiring on or after the bill's effective date, aims to equalize pension calculations for these police officers and is expected to increase employer contributions to the pension fund.
