This bill allows certain employees of the New York State Office of Mental Health, specifically those holding titles related to security hospital treatment assistant, to elect to be covered by different retirement plan provisions within the New York State and Local Employees' Retirement System (NYSLRS). Previously, such elections were generally restricted to the first year of employment in these specific roles. This legislation, however, permits these employees to choose between Article 14 or Article 15 of the retirement and social security law, meaning they can select either an Age-55 retirement plan or a different service-based plan, and this choice, once made and filed with the comptroller, will be final and cannot be changed. The bill is temporary, taking effect shortly after becoming law and expiring 180 days later.
