This bill allows the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to assign physicians to serve as traveling physicians in U.S. territories and possessions such as American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands for up to one year at a time. These traveling physicians will provide healthcare to veterans in these areas, working at VA facilities or other approved healthcare facilities. The bill requires these physicians to coordinate with local medical providers to ensure high-quality, coordinated care. Additionally, the physicians will receive not only their standard pay but also a relocation or retention bonus similar to existing VA bonus structures. The bill makes several technical amendments to existing law, including updating terminology around retention bonuses and extending certain pension payment limits until December 31, 2032. The primary goal is to improve healthcare access for veterans living in U.S. territories by providing them with mobile medical professionals who can temporarily serve in areas that might otherwise struggle to maintain consistent medical staffing.
