This bill authorizes the Centerport Fire District to apply for a tax exemption for a specific property located at 2 State Route 25A in the town of Huntington, Suffolk County, even though the application is being submitted after the standard deadline. Normally, tax exemption applications must be filed by a certain date (known as the taxable status date), but this bill allows the town assessor to accept and review the Centerport Fire District's application for the 2022-2023 assessment roll as if it had been submitted on time. If the assessor determines that the fire district would have qualified for the exemption had they filed on time, and the town of Huntington's governing board approves, the property can be granted an exemption from school and real property taxes. Furthermore, if the fire district has already paid taxes on this property, the governing body may refund those taxes and cancel any remaining unpaid taxes, fines, penalties, or tax liens. The bill takes effect immediately upon passage.
