Bill Summary

AN ACT to amend the civil service law, in relation to the appointment of certain police officers

AI Summary

This bill amends the New York Civil Service Law to modify age requirements for police officers by adding an exception to the standard maximum age of 43 years for taking competitive examinations. Specifically, the bill creates a new provision that exempts part-time police officers in non-competitive positions who are already vested in the New York state and local police and fire retirement system from the standard age limitation. This means that such part-time officers would be allowed to take competitive police officer examinations even if they are over the typical maximum age of 43 years. The bill builds upon existing exceptions to the age rule, such as those for Buffalo municipal housing authority police officers and police officers from counties, towns, cities, or villages where eligible lists have been exhausted. The modification aims to provide more flexibility for part-time police officers who have invested time in their local law enforcement careers and are part of the state's retirement system, potentially allowing them more opportunities for career advancement or full-time positions regardless of their age.
