This bill enacts the "Guaranteed Reservation Protection for Rental Car Customers Act," which establishes new consumer protections for rental car customers. The legislation requires rental vehicle companies to honor the rate quoted in a customer's reservation and prohibits charging higher rates unless specifically authorized. If the exact vehicle reserved is unavailable, the rental company must provide a vehicle of equal or greater value at no additional cost. If no equivalent vehicle is available, the company must reimburse the customer for reasonable transportation expenses to secure an alternative rental vehicle or travel option. Additionally, rental car companies must inform customers about these requirements by displaying them prominently on their websites and through posted signs where customers can easily see them. The bill will take effect 90 days after becoming law and amends Section 396-z of the New York General Business Law to codify these consumer protections.
