This bill reauthorizes and extends the Second Chance Act of 2007, which aims to support the successful reentry of individuals returning to their communities after incarceration. The bill makes several key improvements to existing programs by extending their authorization periods from 2019-2023 to 2026-2030 and expanding the scope of services that can be provided. Specifically, the bill allows for new program activities such as treating substance use disorders through peer recovery services, case management, overdose education, and access to overdose reversal medications. It also enables the provision of reentry housing services and continues to support grants for family-based substance abuse treatment, educational methods in correctional facilities, career training demonstrations, offender reentry substance abuse programs, and community-based mentoring and transitional service grants. These extensions and expansions are designed to help reduce recidivism, support rehabilitation, and assist formerly incarcerated individuals in successfully reintegrating into society by providing comprehensive support services addressing various challenges they may face after release.
