This resolution mourns the death of George Mavropoulos, a Greek immigrant and engineer who made significant contributions to community education and advocacy. Born in Greece in 1938 to Pontian refugees, Mavropoulos immigrated to the United States in 1958, earned degrees in physics and electrical engineering, and worked for 30 years at Commonwealth Edison before becoming a consulting engineer. He was the founder and president of the Asia Minor and Pontos Hellenic Research Center (AMPHRC), a non-profit organization dedicated to researching and raising awareness about the Greek diaspora and genocide. Mavropoulos was also actively involved in the Pontian Greek Society of Chicago and the Illinois Holocaust and Genocide Commission, where he worked to ensure recognition of various historical genocides. He produced a documentary about the genocide of Greeks in Turkey, received multiple awards for his community leadership, and was known as a passionate humanitarian who fought against ethnic, religious, and racial injustice. The resolution extends condolences to his family, including his children Sonia, Alexander, and Konstantinos, and his granddaughter Evagelia "Ava", and resolves to present a copy of the resolution to his family as an expression of sympathy.
