This bill expands the New York Opportunity Promise Scholarship to include all State University of New York (SUNY) and City University of New York (CUNY) colleges, universities, and community colleges offering associate's degree programs in high-demand fields. For the 2025-2026 academic year, these high-demand fields specifically include advanced manufacturing, technology, cybersecurity, engineering, artificial intelligence, nursing and allied health professions, green and renewable energy, and pathways to teaching in shortage areas. The Department of Labor can update the list of high-demand fields annually, with changes to be announced at least 180 days before the fall term begins. Once a student is accepted into an eligible program for a specific semester, their scholarship eligibility for that program will continue. This expansion aims to provide more students with access to tuition-free associate's degree programs in critical and emerging professional sectors, potentially helping to address workforce needs and increase educational opportunities across New York state.
