This bill establishes the "SNAP for students act" to improve access to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) for college students in New York. The bill requires the Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance to create comprehensive, multilingual informational materials about SNAP benefits, including details on eligibility requirements, application processes, and additional resources. These materials must be updated annually and made available online in English and Spanish. Institutions of higher education will be mandated to notify students at least annually about their potential SNAP eligibility, using electronic communication methods. The bill also requires the New York State Higher Education Services Corporation to notify students who apply for tuition assistance about potential SNAP benefits. Additionally, the office must submit an annual public report detailing the number of students who applied for, were eligible for, and received SNAP benefits, as well as an assessment of the program's effectiveness in reaching students. The goal of the bill is to reduce food insecurity among college students by ensuring they are informed about and can more easily access nutrition assistance.
