This bill seeks to amend the Indian Health Care Improvement Act by establishing an Office of Graduate Medical Education Programs (OGMEP) within the Indian Health Service (IHS). The office will focus on creating a professional pipeline for healthcare workers, overseeing and facilitating residency and fellowship programs at IHS facilities, serving as a central hub for these programs, working with academic institutions, and coordinating medical student education tracks. To support this initiative, the bill calls for an interagency working group that includes representatives from the Departments of Veterans Affairs, Labor, and other federal health agencies, which will help implement and develop long-term sustainability plans for the office. The working group is required to submit quarterly reports to Congress and will operate for 10 years. The bill authorizes appropriations of $4 million for fiscal year 2027 and $4 million for each subsequent fiscal year to support the OGMEP's operations.
