This bill seeks to penalize "sanctuary cities" - municipalities that limit cooperation with federal immigration enforcement - by restricting their access to federal financial assistance. Specifically, the Attorney General would be required to annually identify and report to Congress any state or local jurisdictions that either: (1) do not comply with a federal law requiring local governments to share immigration information with federal authorities, or (2) refuse to cooperate with Department of Homeland Security (DHS) detainer requests or notifications about the release of specific individuals. Any jurisdiction found to be non-compliant would be barred from receiving federal financial assistance for a minimum of one year, and could only regain funding eligibility after the Attorney General certifies that the jurisdiction has become compliant with immigration enforcement cooperation requirements.
