This resolution recognizes June 15, 2025, as "Delaware Elder Abuse Awareness Day" in response to the significant and often overlooked problem of elder abuse. Drawing on data from the National Council on Aging, which estimates that 1 in 10 Americans aged 60 and above experience some form of elder abuse, the resolution highlights the various types of abuse, including caregiver neglect, financial fraud, physical and psychological abuse, and sexual abuse. The resolution emphasizes that elder abuse is a widespread issue, with most cases going unreported, and can have profound negative impacts on victims' physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Particularly vulnerable are socially isolated individuals and those with memory-impacting conditions like Alzheimer's. The resolution acknowledges the efforts of various state entities, such as the Department of Health and Social Services, the Delaware Nursing Home Residents Quality Assurance Commission, the Department of Justice, and Community Legal Aid Society, Inc., in addressing elder abuse. Furthermore, it calls on all Delawareans to educate themselves about protecting and supporting elderly citizens, aligning with the National Committee for the Prevention of Elder Abuse's annual World Elder Abuse Awareness Day.
