This resolution recognizes the Village of Hanover Park's 2025 Juneteenth celebration, providing historical context about the significance of the holiday. Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery in the United States, marking the date (June 19, 1865) when slaves in Galveston, Texas, finally learned they were free, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation and shortly after the Civil War's conclusion. The resolution highlights that while President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863, it took until June 19, 1865, for slaves in Texas to receive news of their freedom. The Hanover Park Sister Cities Committee will host the celebration on June 21, 2025, featuring live music, vendors, food trucks, and children's activities. The Illinois House of Representatives formally recognizes this event as an opportunity to reflect on and commemorate the end of slavery, and will present an official copy of the resolution to the Village of Hanover Park as a gesture of respect and esteem.
