This bill establishes a Chronic Absenteeism Task Force in New Jersey to comprehensively investigate and address student absenteeism in public schools. The task force will consist of 20 members, including the Commissioner of Education, four members appointed by legislative leaders, and 15 members appointed by the Governor representing various educational organizations and stakeholders. The task force's responsibilities include examining pre-pandemic and current absenteeism data, analyzing root causes of chronic absence (such as mental health, school climate, and attendance barriers), researching best practices from other states, and developing recommendations for promoting family engagement and addressing attendance challenges. The group will specifically look into issues related to COVID-19 exposure and student discipline policies, and will be required to produce a final report with findings and legislative recommendations within six months of its organization. Members will serve without compensation but will be reimbursed for necessary expenses, and the Department of Education will provide administrative support. The task force will automatically expire 30 days after submitting its final report to the Governor and Legislature.
