This bill requires the Michigan Department of Education to develop and provide cultural competency professional learning resources to schools by June 1, 2027, covering topics such as understanding diversity, cultural identity, historic contributions of various ethnic and cultural groups, and implicit bias. Starting in the 2027-2028 school year, all educators will be required to complete training using these resources or comparable existing resources, which can be included as part of their professional development. Additionally, all school personnel who interact with students (except educators) must also receive cultural competency training, though they are not required to complete the historical contributions portion of the training. The bill also allows the department to make available instructional materials about the history of various cultural groups that align with state social studies content standards. The goal of these requirements is to improve understanding of diversity, promote a sense of belonging for students, and provide comprehensive cultural awareness training for school staff.
