This bill requires all Michigan public schools to incorporate one unit of age- and grade-appropriate instruction on the history and contributions of six specific demographic groups, beginning in the 2027-2028 school year. The groups are Black Americans, Indigenous People, Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, Latin American/Hispanic/Caribbean Americans, Middle Eastern/North African/Chaldean Americans, Jewish Americans, and European Americans. For each group, the instruction must cover their contributions to government, arts, humanities, sciences, economic and cultural development, state and regional history, civil rights advancements, and past discriminatory policies. The superintendent of public instruction must develop instructional materials in consultation with cultural centers and scholars, ensuring alignment with state social studies standards. Schools must provide this instruction in a manner that is inclusive, non-discriminatory, and appropriate for students of all backgrounds. Instructors will have flexibility in incorporating these units into existing lesson plans, and the instruction can be delivered through in-person or virtual courses. The bill aims to provide comprehensive, culturally sensitive historical education that recognizes the diverse contributions of various ethnic and cultural groups to the United States.
