This bill establishes a five-year pilot program designed to help transitioning military service members become Border Patrol agents. The Secretary of Homeland Security, in collaboration with the Departments of Defense and Veterans Affairs, will create an interdepartmental program using the existing Department of Defense SkillBridge Program to train and hire service members who are preparing to leave military service. The program will utilize existing legal authorities to facilitate the transition of military personnel into Border Patrol roles. Each year, the Secretary of Homeland Security must submit a detailed report to congressional committees, providing information about the program's participants, including their military status (such as active duty, reserve, enlisted, or officer), veteran status, and whether they are spouses or dependents of service members or veterans. The pilot program will automatically end five years after its establishment, allowing Congress to evaluate its effectiveness and decide whether to continue, modify, or discontinue the initiative. The goal is to leverage the skills, discipline, and experience of military personnel to support border security efforts while providing a structured pathway for service members transitioning to civilian employment.
