This bill establishes a new distinctive license plate for the Adirondack Park, a large protected natural area in New York State. Any New York resident can request these special plates, which will be designed by the Commissioner of Motor Vehicles in consultation with the Commissioner of Environmental Conservation. To obtain the plates, individuals must submit an application and pay the standard vehicle registration fee plus a one-time $25 service charge. Before the plates can be produced, the Department of Motor Vehicles must either secure a $6,000 surety bond or receive at least 200 pre-orders with accompanying service charges. The service charges will be deposited into a special fund used for designing, producing, advertising, and distributing distinctive license plates. If fewer than 200 sets of the Adirondack Park plates are sold within two years of becoming available, the department can recover a proportionate amount from the surety bond. The bill will take effect immediately, with the actual plate program beginning 180 days after the law is enacted, allowing time for regulatory preparation.
