This bill establishes the "Youth & Teen Internet Safety and Social Media Literacy Act", which directs the Commissioner of Education to provide technical assistance to school districts for developing age-appropriate internet safety and social media literacy curricula for students from kindergarten through twelfth grade. The bill requires the development of comprehensive resources for students in grades three through twelve and their parents/guardians, covering topics such as time management, healthy online behaviors, potential negative effects of internet and social media use, personal security, cyberbullying prevention, identifying predatory behavior, copyright laws, and understanding the permanence of online sharing. For middle and high school students (grades six through twelve), the resources will also include information about how social media can manipulate behavior and the legal consequences of sharing inappropriate content. The curriculum may utilize peer-to-peer observational learning and modeling concepts, and schools are given the option to provide this instruction to help students develop awareness, skills, and support for safe internet, social media, and artificial intelligence usage. The act will take effect on the first of July following its passage into law.
