This bill modifies the definition and retirement considerations for federal firefighters, expanding the criteria for who qualifies as a firefighter and allowing more flexibility in service breaks. Importantly, the legislation also provides retroactive consideration for service performed between October 1, 2003, and the bill's enactment date, enabling eligible individuals to potentially receive credit for past service. To take advantage of this provision, individuals must submit a written election to their employing agency and remit additional retirement deduction amounts for the retroactive period. The Office of Personnel Management is tasked with informing and assisting eligible individuals in verifying and obtaining credit for their service.
