This bill establishes a new judicial district in Antrim County and modifies the existing district court structure by adding Antrim County to the list of counties where the probate judge can also serve as a district judge. Specifically, the bill creates the ninety-ninth judicial district consisting solely of Antrim County and allows the Antrim County probate judge to serve as the judge for this new district. The bill also removes Antrim County from the eighty-sixth district (which now consists of only Grand Traverse and Leelanau counties) and reduces the number of judges in the eighty-sixth district from 3 to 2. The changes to the district court system are designed to streamline the judicial structure in Antrim County, giving the probate judge additional responsibilities as a district judge. An important provision is that the existing district judges in the eighty-sixth district will continue to serve as incumbent judges. The bill is set to take effect on January 1, 2026, and notably does not require approval from the district control unit for creating the new judicial district.
