This bill provides special accidental death benefits to Rachel Marie Troy, the surviving spouse of Mathew M. Troy, a former Boston firefighter. Despite existing laws that might otherwise limit such benefits, the bill allows the Boston Retirement Board to pay Rachel a lump sum equal to her husband's accumulated retirement deductions. Additionally, she will receive a yearly pension equal to 72% of Mathew's annual compensation, calculated based on either his compensation at the time of injury or his average compensation in the twelve months before his death, whichever is higher. The bill also ensures that Rachel can retain medical insurance coverage equivalent to what Mathew would have received had he retired from the City of Boston. The legislation is specifically designed to support Rachel after Mathew's death from a health condition, including Cholangiocarcinoma (a rare type of bile duct cancer), which was suffered while he was performing his essential duties as a firefighter. The bill will take effect immediately upon passage, providing immediate support to the surviving spouse.
