This bill requires the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) and its deputy registrars to proactively help customers identify and claim unclaimed funds during in-person transactions. Specifically, when a person is at a BMV office, the registrar or deputy registrar must ask if they would like to check for unclaimed funds under Ohio law. If the customer requests a check, the BMV staff will search using the person's name and available information to determine if they have any unclaimed funds. If unclaimed funds are found, the BMV staff will offer to help the customer submit a claim, using both the information in their records and any additional information provided by the customer. The bill also allows the registrar, in coordination with the Director of Commerce, to develop necessary policies and procedures to implement this new service. This represents an effort to make it easier for Ohio residents to recover money that may have been forgotten or overlooked in various financial accounts.
