The multi-user breast pump is defined as a high-quality, electric-powered device with specific technical capabilities, such as being able to safely support milk supply and being durable enough for frequent use. The bill mandates coverage for these breast pumps when a newborn is receiving care in an intensive care or special care nursery, or has medical conditions preventing direct breastfeeding. Additionally, the bill requires insurers to provide coverage for replacement pump parts, breast milk storage bags, sterilization bags, and professional support from an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC), including initial assessment and fitting as well as ongoing support. The bill applies to multiple types of health insurance programs, including the state group insurance commission, Medicaid, and various private insurance plans, ensuring comprehensive coverage across different healthcare systems.
