This bill amends the Texas Transportation Code to expand the definition of "authorized emergency vehicle" by adding a new category: a private vehicle belonging to a medical staff physician or technician from a state-licensed medical facility, when responding to a medical emergency in a county subject to Chapter 288 of the Health and Safety Code. Specifically, this new type of authorized emergency vehicle can only be designated as such by the commissioners court of the specific county. The bill provides this vehicle classification the same emergency vehicle status as other types of vehicles currently defined in the code, such as police and fire department vehicles, ambulances, and emergency management vehicles. This modification allows medical professionals in certain counties to have their personal vehicles recognized as emergency vehicles when they are urgently responding to medical situations, potentially enabling them to use certain emergency vehicle privileges like special driving considerations during a crisis. The bill is set to take effect on January 1, 2026.
