This resolution commemorates the 100th anniversary of West University Elementary School in Houston Independent School District, highlighting the school's rich history and significant community contributions. Founded in 1925 in the West University Place community, the school was originally designed by architect Lamar Cato in a Spanish Renaissance style and was built with a $55,000 bond, initially also housing Pershing Junior High until 1949. After experiencing deterioration in the 1970s, the school underwent a successful community-driven revitalization, expanding its attendance zone and adding 25,000 square feet of new learning space through a $9.6 million bond project. Currently serving approximately 1,200 students from pre-K to fifth grade under Principal Scott Disch, the school offers a Vanguard Neighborhood program for gifted students and a comprehensive special education program. The resolution acknowledges the school's planned centennial celebrations during the 2025-2026 school year, which will include a parade, a homecoming game at Rice University, a teacher reunion, and a gala. By commemorating West University Elementary School, the Texas House of Representatives recognizes the institution's century-long commitment to educating and enriching young Texans, and officially expresses its high regard by preparing an official copy of the resolution for the school.
