This bill establishes new restrictions on immigration enforcement actions in sensitive locations throughout Michigan. The bill defines "sensitive locations" as including educational institutions, places of worship, hospitals, funeral or wedding sites, courthouses, and locations assisting vulnerable populations like children, pregnant women, crime victims, or individuals with significant disabilities. An "immigration enforcement action" is defined as arresting, interviewing, searching, or surveilling an individual for immigration-related purposes. Under the bill, law enforcement officers are generally prohibited from conducting such actions in these sensitive locations, with two key exceptions: (1) when a court order specifically directs the officer to enter the location, and (2) when the action is necessary to address an imminent public safety threat. The legislation aims to create safe spaces where individuals, regardless of immigration status, can access essential services like education, healthcare, and religious activities without fear of immigration enforcement interruption.
