This bill amends the Michigan Vehicle Code to add a new special registration plate for "Next of Kin" of military service members who died while serving on active duty or in a reserve or National Guard unit. The bill defines "next of kin" as the deceased service member's surviving spouse (even if remarried), biological parents, step-parents, adoptive parents, foster parents, children, step-children, adopted children, siblings, and half-siblings. The special plate will be inscribed with unique identification numbers and preceded by an insignia of the Next of Kin of Deceased Personnel lapel button, with the words "Next of Kin" beneath the registration number. Like other military-related special registration plates in Michigan, this plate will be available through application to the secretary of state, will not require a service fee, and will expire on the vehicle owner's birthday in the year new plates are issued. The bill adds this new category to existing special registration plates for groups like prisoners of war, Purple Heart recipients, Gold Star families, and Blue Star families, and will take effect 180 days after being enacted into law.
