This bill establishes a Veterans Scam and Fraud Evasion Officer within the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to help protect veterans from fraudulent activities. The officer will be responsible for developing comprehensive communication strategies, establishing guidance on identifying and reporting scams, promoting a dedicated fraud hotline and website, and monitoring fraud metrics. They will coordinate with various federal agencies, including the IRS, Department of Justice, and Social Security Administration, to create a coordinated approach to fraud prevention. The officer will also develop training plans for VA employees, consult with veterans service organizations, and help veterans find resources to prevent and mitigate fraud attempts. Importantly, the bill specifies that this new role will not increase the number of full-time employees at the VA and does not limit the existing authority of the VA's Inspector General. As a secondary provision, the bill also extends certain pension payment limits to January 30, 2032. The overall goal is to create a centralized point of contact and comprehensive strategy to protect veterans from scams and fraud.
