This bill, titled the "Make the District of Columbia Safe and Beautiful Act of 2025," establishes a program to beautify the District of Columbia and creates the District of Columbia Safe and Beautiful Commission. The program, to be developed by the Secretary of the Interior within 30 days of enactment and ending on January 2, 2029, aims to coordinate Federal and local efforts to maintain the cleanliness of public spaces, restore damaged monuments and memorials, and encourage private sector involvement. The Commission, also terminating on January 2, 2029, will be composed of representatives from various Federal departments and agencies, including the Department of the Interior, Department of Transportation, Department of Homeland Security, FBI, and U.S. Attorney's Offices, as well as the Mayor of the District of Columbia's office. The Commission's functions include recommending actions and reviewing their effectiveness on issues such as enforcing Federal immigration law, monitoring the District's "sanctuary-city" status, ensuring the accreditation of the District's forensic crime laboratory, assisting the Metropolitan Police Department with recruitment and retention, expediting concealed carry license requests, reviewing pretrial detention policies, addressing fare evasion on public transit, and increasing the Federal and local law enforcement presence in key areas of the District. The Secretary of the Interior will report annually on the beautification program's progress, and the Commission will report its findings and recommendations to Congress.
