AI Summary
This bill amends existing law to allow students to opt out of the workforce readiness assessment portion of the Michigan Merit Examination, which is a standardized test administered to 11th and 12th graders in Michigan. The Michigan Merit Examination is a comprehensive assessment that includes college entrance tests, work skills tests, and the Michigan Student Test of Educational Progress (M-STEP). The workforce readiness assessment is designed to help employers make hiring decisions by evaluating a student's ability to apply reading and mathematics skills. Starting with the 2026-2027 school year, students can elect not to take this specific part of the exam by submitting a waiver signed by a parent or legal guardian by February 28th. The bill also requires schools to provide an informational letter to students and parents about the purpose and benefits of the workforce readiness assessment by December 31st of the school year the test is administered.
