AI Summary

This bill establishes an agricultural purchase program administered by the Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) that will provide grants to nonprofit food banks, food pantries, other nonprofit organizations, and local food distributors to purchase food products made or grown in Wisconsin. The program aims to support local agriculture while also addressing food assistance needs. Under the bill, DATCP will be authorized to award grants from a specific appropriation (s. 20.115 (4) (aq)) to eligible entities for the purpose of buying locally produced food. To support the implementation of this program, the bill increases DATCP's authorized positions by two full-time equivalent (FTE) GPR positions: one program specialist and one grants specialist. The bill allocates $30 million for the program and will take effect on the day after publication, or the second day after publication of the 2025 biennial budget act, whichever is later. By creating this program, the state seeks to simultaneously support Wisconsin farmers and improve food access for communities in need.
