This bill amends the parks, recreation, and historic preservation law to expand the existing list of groups who can use state parks and campsites for free. In addition to previously defined groups like blind, non-ambulatory, or amputee individuals, and veterans or Gold Star family members, the bill now includes several categories of retired first responders from New York state: retired law enforcement officers (such as police and correction officers), retired court system employees, retired paid or volunteer firefighters, and retired volunteer ambulance service members. These individuals will be permitted to use public campsites, parks, and recreational areas without paying any fees, under the same terms and conditions as the general public. The bill aims to provide a benefit to those who have served their communities in critical public service roles, recognizing their contributions by offering them free access to state recreational facilities. The law would take effect immediately upon passage.
