This bill requires the Secretary of Defense to conduct biennial (every two years) assessments of nutrition standards across military departments, including a comprehensive review of nutrition programs, policies, and food options available to military personnel at military installations. The Secretary must submit these assessment reports to the Congressional Armed Services Committees and publish them on a public Department of Defense website, with the first report due by December 1, 2026. Additionally, the bill mandates that within 180 days of enactment, the Under Secretaries of Defense for Personnel and Readiness and for Acquisition and Sustainment, in coordination with other relevant officials, develop and submit a plan to improve access to nutritious food on military installations. This plan must include a specific strategy for increasing nutritious menu options at food service venues on military installations that are not funded by appropriated amounts, drawing from recommendations in a June 2024 Government Accountability Office report about DOD food programs. The overall goal is to enhance the quality and nutritional value of food available to members of the Armed Forces.
