This bill amends the Public Health Code to update requirements for obtaining a marriage and family therapist license in Michigan, with a key focus on allowing virtual supervision for clinical experience. The bill modifies existing educational and supervised experience requirements, specifically expanding the definition of acceptable supervision settings to include two-way real-time secure technology that allows direct, contemporaneous interaction by sight or sound. Applicants can now complete up to half of their required direct client contact hours and supervision through virtual means, which previously required physical in-person presence. The bill maintains rigorous standards by requiring 300 hours of direct client contact during supervised clinical experience and 1,000 hours of supervised marriage and family therapy experience. It also broadens the types of licensed professionals who can serve as supervisors, including marriage and family therapists, licensed social workers, professional counselors, physicians practicing in mental health settings, psychologists, and approved supervisors from the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy. For individuals with a doctoral degree in marriage and family therapy from an approved program, certain supervision requirements can be waived, providing additional flexibility in the licensing process.
