AI Summary

This bill creates a new criminal offense called "failure to report a death" in the Criminal Code of 2012. Under the new law, a person commits this offense if they know or should reasonably know that someone has died and do not report the death to a law enforcement agency within 24 hours of discovering the death. Specifically, individuals must report a death to the law enforcement agency in the county where the body was found if they believe the death was caused by a homicide, accident, or other suspicious circumstances. The bill classifies failure to report a death as a Class 4 felony. Additionally, the bill amends the Code of Criminal Procedure to allow courts to deny pretrial release for individuals charged with this offense if the court determines that the defendant's release could pose a real and present threat to the safety of any person or the community, based on the specific facts of the case. This new law aims to ensure timely reporting of deaths that may involve criminal activity and provides law enforcement with a mechanism to investigate potentially suspicious deaths more quickly.
