This bill amends the Food, Agriculture, Conservation, and Trade Act of 1990 to establish the Tropical Plant Health Initiative, which authorizes research and extension grants focused on addressing challenges facing tropical plants. Specifically, the bill allows for grants to develop science-based tools and treatments to combat plant pests and noxious weeds impacting specific tropical plants including coffee, macadamia, cacao, plantains, bananas, mangos, floriculture and nursery crops, vanilla, and other tropical plants as determined by the Secretary of Agriculture. The grants can support establishing integrated pest management programs, surveying and collecting data on tropical plant production and health, investigating plant biology and genomics, and researching factors affecting plant immune systems and other serious threats. Additionally, the bill extends the authorization of appropriations for these research efforts from 2023 to 2030, providing continued funding for this important agricultural research initiative aimed at protecting and improving tropical plant health.
