This bill amends the Corrections Code of 1953 to require the Department of Corrections to provide reentry services and support to individuals discharged from custody before their maximum discharge date due to their conviction or sentence being reversed, vacated, or overturned, or immediately after being resentenced for a "qualifying event." A "qualifying event" is defined as a resentencing required by specific U.S. Supreme Court and Michigan Supreme Court cases, particularly those related to juvenile sentencing. These services include reentry services (excluding housing) for up to two years and reentry housing for up to one year, mirroring services provided to parolees, as well as vital documents like birth certificates and state identification cards. The department will assign staff to ensure timely provision of these services and documents. However, if a prisoner's conviction is reinstated or they are resentenced and returned to custody for the same offense, they will be required to repay the department for the reentry services received.
