This resolution recognizes and celebrates the 80th anniversary of Alpha Chi Pi Omega, a historically Black sorority and fraternity for beauticians and barbers, founded by Dr. Marjorie Stewart Joyner on October 27, 1945, in Washington, D.C. The resolution highlights Dr. Joyner's remarkable career as a cosmetologist, civil rights leader, and entrepreneur, including her connection to Madame C.J. Walker, her appointment as Chairman of the Illinois State Board of Beauty Culture, and her work supporting Black servicemen during World War II through the USO. It acknowledges her efforts to provide economic independence and social opportunities for Black women and men during a challenging period of racial segregation, and recognizes her close association with First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt in fighting discrimination. The resolution also notes the upcoming 80th International Conclave and Joyner Hair and Beauty Expo in Washington, D.C., where the organization will celebrate its Ruby Anniversary Jubilee with a reenactment of its first founding meeting. By passing this resolution, the Council of the District of Columbia officially recognizes Dr. Joyner's enduring legacy and the significant contributions of Alpha Chi Pi Omega to Black culture and entrepreneurship.
