This bill requires public and chartered nonpublic schools to purchase and install an exterior secure master key box on each school building by June 30, 2027. The master key box must be located in a strategic position for optimal law enforcement response and permit emergency access for both law enforcement and emergency responders. Each key box must meet Underwriters Laboratories standard 1037 and must contain master external and internal keys, access cards, and maps of the school buildings. Schools must collaborate with local law enforcement to ensure the key box is properly stocked and must provide updates to law enforcement when there are substantial modifications to school buildings or changes to keys and access cards. Schools may apply for school safety training grants from the Attorney General to help cover the cost of purchasing and installing the master key box. The bill amends existing sections of Ohio law related to community schools, STEM schools, and college-preparatory boarding schools to incorporate this new requirement, ensuring that all types of public and chartered nonpublic schools comply with the new master key box provision.
